Alistair, Sophie, Amy and Matthew's trip to Tanzania and Zanzibar in December 2004

Tanzania Photos

The arrival point in Tanzania is a coffee plantation in the hills above Arusha, near Kilimanjaro.
First day on safari is an extinct volcanic crater south of the Serengeti, providing shelter and lush grass for flamingo, big cats, elephant and rhino.
Climb 3000m Mount Makarot and cross to the plains of the Serengeti with Lazaro, our Maasai guide.
Four days of safari into the Serengeti, camping in the middle of the national park. Saw huge heards of wildebeest and zebra, together with lion, cheetah, leopard, buffalo and elephant.
A couple of days to recover at a farm serving fresh, home-grown produce before flying to Zanzibar for Christmas.

Arrive at Matemwe Beach Village and spend the next 5 days swimming in the lagoon, snorkelling around the reef of Mbwene Island, reading of Mma Ramotswe (No.1 Ladies Detective Agency), and go for a sail in a Dhow with "King" Solomon. Christmas Eve banquet (with silly hats and Christmas tree made from palm leaves) and singing from the local Church Choir.
Enter Stone Town on Christmas Day and find our way to the "Two Tables" restaurant for Christmas Dinner. Place turns out to be the cook's back room with two tables set out for guests; the food is great. Went on spice tour, climbed the House of Wonders, and enjoyed sundowners at Africa House.
Marine Park and protected island, run as an education centre and eco-tourism haven. The military banned fishing down one side of the island for many years, so over 200 species of coral thrive a few metres from the beach. Swam with turtles, saw Christmas star fish and wondered at the massive coconut crabs. Heaven!
